Remembering Derek Shepard M.D., aka, McDreamy, from Grey’s Anatomy
When a patient flat lines on an OR Table, it’s a depressing thing for those trying to save him and pain for the patient’s family. It was quite another when Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy, was sent to the morgue on Grey’s Anatomy. Millions of people mourned his passing after he was killed on the ABC drama.
Patrick Dempsey the actor who portrayed McDreamy said in an interview with EW that it all happened “very quickly” and “there wasn’t a lot of discussion.”
I haven’t watched the show much recently, but absolutely never imagined the main character being eliminated. Patrick Dempsey made Derek. He delivered the writer’s lines as happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true. He epitomized what romance is between modern couples.
Some of the episodes that make the character Derek, Dr. McDreamy:
Remembering his last kiss with Meredith (Season 2, Episode 17)
After a bomb scare, where the bomb was inside a patient, Derek stops by Meredith’s house.
“You almost died today,”
She takes in Derek’s face, his eyes and mouth and admits she can’t remember their last kiss. He almost leaves, but bends back in to describe the kiss down to the smallest detail.
“You kissed me, soft. It was quick. Kind of like a habit. You know, like we’d do it every day for the rest of our lives.”
Prom (Season 2, Episode 27)
Derek spent an entire season trying to work out problems with his wife, Addison, after she sleeps with his best friend. He finally surrenders to his feelings for Meredith, his colleague. But before he tells her, he gives her a look across the dance floor that tells her without words. In that moment, Meredith recognizes she feels the same.
The first “I love you” (Season 3, Episode 1)
Derek and Meredith finally talk about what their sleeping together means. Derek tells Meredith she has a choice. Tripping over his words, he looks at her in the way only he can, and murmurs, “I’m in love with you. I’ve been in love with you forever.” He hesitates then tells her to take her time making her decision between him and Finn… because “when I had a choice to make, I chose wrong.” Image Credit: ABC
“I’m always gonna show up” (Season 3, Episode 13)
Derek and Meredith get into a argument at the hospital and she departed for home without him. Derek showed up at her door and Meredith says she is surprised to see him. He explained that’s how relationships work. “People fight and then someone apologizes. From now on, you can expect that I’m going to show up. Even if I yell, even if you yell, I’m always gonna show up. Okay?”
Burke and Cristina’s wedding (Season 3, Episode 25)
Meredith and Derek’s relationship is on the rocks when he tells her he met another woman. As a result, Meredith tells him to end things if he doesn’t love her anymore. Derek tells her, “I can’t. Meredith, I do love you. Don’t you see? Don’t you understand? You’re the love of my life. I can’t leave you. But you’re constantly leaving me.” He then asks her to end it if she doesn’t see a future for them, because he can’t. He’s in it. Image Credit: ABC
The proposal (Season 5, Episode 19)
The elevator opens, and Derek stands there wearing a dark suit, smiling, surrounded by brain scans. “I’m not going to get down on one knee. I’m not going to ask a question,” After walking her through surgeries they had worked on together, he said, “I love you, Meredith Grey. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” It’s McDreamy at his romantic, self-assured best.

The Post-it note wedding (Season 5, Episode 24)
Meredith and Derek schedules make it difficult getting to City Hall to officially marry, so Derek proposes that they write their vows on a piece of paper in the locker room while they have a free minute. All Meridith had was a Post-it note, so Derek wrote their vows to each other on the blue square—including the statement “we’ll take care of each other even when we’re old and smelly and senile”—before asking Meredith to sign her name and seal the deal. —Ariana Bacle
