I remember when 50 Shades of Grey was first published and writers in a group I belonged to ridiculed the poor writing. I didn’t read the book then and I’m probably the only female in the US who didn’t read it right away. But the success of this book spurred a plethora of copycat novels over the next few years with a heavier emphasis on sex. In fact, it’s hard to pick up a romance novel today that doesn’t have an emphasis on sex.
Dubbed ‘Mommy Porn’, the popular erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey will be released as a film on Valentine’s day..Written by E.L. James, the story follows the relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young, successful business man, Christian Grey, who introduces her to the world of bondage,discipline and dominant/submissive sexual role play. After the novel was published in the UK and US, hardware stores reported an increase in sales of rope, cable ties and tape.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the R18 film has been criticized by domestic violence groups, who have called for a boycott. But reviewers say the early scenes of the movie rely more on sensuality and tension between the couple, played by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, rather than full-on sex.

I finally read the book. And yes, from a writer’s standpoint, it suffered particularly from redundant use of phrases and words. But the book was also like a train wreck. You cannot resist trying to find out what is happening. Then suddenly the book is over. Will I see the movie? Maybe, but not right away.

Beats me why any woman would let a man beat the S*** out of her in the name of sex. That’s some weird stuff. I sure wouldn’t want a woman to tie me up or whip me. So no, I haven’t read the book and I won’t see the movie. Got better things to occupy my time.

There are definitely some men and women who want to be in total control. This book is just a peak inside the characters’ minds in the early stages of a romance where BDSM is part of their physical/sexual relationship. It skates on the boundary of being heavy erotica.

Won’t read the book. Won’t see the movie. I believe making control “romantic” and sexy feeds into the rising violence we see against women. I once knew “Christian Grey” and barely got out alive. It’s dangerous.

I can see where you would have concerns about this movie.I saw where Family First is protesting it because they feel it romanticizes violence
against women.
