As a Southern California resident, Kurt Kamm was used to the idea of wildfires. Then, in 2006, a 60 mile-per-hour Santa Ana wind-driven Canyon Fire burned right to Kamm’s front door. Kurt had just begun writing his first fire fighting novel and the lessons he learned from the County Fire Department while writing his book helped him save his home.

A graduate of Brown University and Columbia Law School, Kurt Kamm has been a financial executive and semi-professional bicycle racer. He also served as Chairman of the UCLA/Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Foundation for several years and is a supporter of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.(kurtkamm.com)

TVCover-smI was one of the fortunate reviewers to read his first novel and I enjoyed the reading experience, but his latest novel TUNNEL VISIONS is really a gripping, exciting, action packed adventure mystery mixed with historical detail. Historical facts of the Sylmar Tunnel explosion  which happened in 1971 and killed 17 miners is detailed.  The struggle for control over California’s diminishing water supply, and a fictional plot to attack Los Angeles’ water system are expertly woven together. Many Americans may not be aware of the water issues and possibly do not give the issue much thought but Kamm brings attention to the issue in vivid detail.

Nick Carter is a USAR trained firefighter and son of Willie Carter. Carter was one of 17 men killed in a methane explosion in what became known as the Sylmar Tunnel disaster. Nick’s fiancee, Cindi, is an ATF Special Agent. On a Sunday in 2014, Nick and Cindi are part of a massive Homeland Security response to a terror alert in Los Angeles. The author uses a series of flashbacks to go back and forth from the current day story of the terrorists to Nick’s childhood and early career. There are two themes in the novel, one of history with the details of the real disaster and  a mystery . At the end of the novel past and present merge in a startling way for Nick..  The background and detail that Kamm writes is almost too fascinating to be true, but it shines a light on a real problem.

If you like to read really gripping novels, this is the one for you. A 2014 USA Best Book Award- fiction: General – Finalist, I can  recommend this without reservations.
